AVOIDING HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

Tip 1: Maintain weight versus Losing weight

You want to enjoy the season so don't put extra demands on yourself. However, that's why it's important to follow the remaining tips.

Tip 2: Get in 30 minutes of exercise EVERY day.

Consistency is key, especially when you might be eating more than usual. Do what you enjoy--walking, cycling, running, swimming, aerobics, yoga, pilates or strength training. At the very least, ten minutes of getting your heart rate up will do. Aside from keeping your weight in check, exercise is a fabulous stress reliever and can set the tone for the rest of your day. (When I am pressed for time, I put in a 20-minute exercise dvd before I begin my workday. That's a 200 calorie burn.)

Tip 3: Eat Before an Event or Party

Never go to a party on an empty stomach. Eat some fruit, vegetables and even protein. Pears, oranges, apples, grapes, bananas are high in fiber, taste good and take the edge off. A piece of cheese or lean meat are also filling.

Tip 4: Plan ahead

When you get to the party, check out the food spread and select the items you really want. I still like my sweets and choose something I rarely eat so it becomes a special treat. Then I fill the rest of my plate with lighter fare; vegetables, lettuce salads. Use dressings sparingly. They can be high in fat and sugar.

Tip 5:  Watch your portions

Keep portions small (use your fist as a guide) and DO NOT get any seconds.  You don't need to pile the food high. Remember, you ate something BEFORE the party! I'm a big fan of writing down what you eat.  If you're already keeping a food diary, then it's even more important to continue during the holiday season. Journaling can help you maintain your weight and it is a proven weight loss tool.  However, don't stress if it seems too much to start one right now. You can always begin one during a less busy time of year.

Tip 6: Move away from the food!

Take your plate and find someone to talk to away from the buffet table. Nibble your food;eating slowly will make you feel full longer.

Tip 7: Focus on Family & Friends Not Food

Don't focus on the food. Find someone you enjoy and make the party about  re-connecting with family and friends.

Tip 8: Tis the season to toast but watch the alcohol

Everything in moderation. After having two drinks, it’s time to at least take a break--get some water with a lemon wedge, club soda or coffee. Also, easy on the eggnog, especially the spiked! (High in fat and calories)

Tip 9: Take Time for Yourself

Ok, quit laughing! I am serious. All you have to do is find five minutes in a quiet place--the car, closet, bathroom, wherever you can escape. Take those precious moments to close your eyes, breath deeply, listening to yourself inhale and exhale. Slowly. I do this every day, usually followed by a prayer. Try it and I promise you'll feel calm, re-energized and more focused.

Tip 10: Maintain Perspective

It doesn't matter what time of year, we're never going to be perfect. If you don't follow any of the above tips and go hog wild, pig crazy at a party, consider it a one time gorge fest. However, several days of overeating and you're on your way to new weight woes. And who needs that kind of stress?
